Here is another yummy topping for that homemade ice-cream!  My kids LOVED this…the jar didn’t last long in our house!  Enjoy!

HOMEMADE MAGIC SHELL #1

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil
  • 11.5 oz. bag (or 1 1/2 cups) of chocolate chips or other flavored chips such as peanut butter or butterscotch

Melt coconut oil over low heat.

Stir in chocolate chips until melted.

Allow to cool to room temperature before pouring over ice cream.

Store in a pint jar in your cupboard. It may become hard when you store it, but simply warm it in the microwave or in a pan of warm water before using.

HOMEMADE MAGIC SHELL #2

  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup honey (or your choice of sweetener)
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • pinch of sea salt

In a saucepan, melt all ingredients slowly over low heat until smooth.

Allow to cool to room temperature before pouring over ice cream.

Store in a pint jar in your cupboard. It may become hard when you store it, but simply warm it in the microwave or in a pan of warm water before using.

  1. You can use any other oil, such as grapeseed, canola, safflower ..... I have made it several times with others. I store it in the frig but may not have to - don't know. It does harden but, again, I just warm it up slightly on the stove. It still hardens just as quickly on ice cream. Yum, yum, yum! (I've only made it with the chips - oh, just realized, I use butter too. That's why I refrigerate! My recipe from Budget101.com uses oil & butter. So I'm definitely wanting to try the coconut oil version.)
  2. Sheri - thanks for sharing the recipe. I do have a question. Is there a substitute for coconut oil? Thanks!
    1. I don't know of a substitute. The coconut oil works great because it hardens when cold. I suppose you could use lard or shortening, but it definitely would not be as healthy! Coconut oil is SO good!
    2. Actually, yes. You can use this recipe: https://www.copykat.com/2009/02/13/magic-shell/ It uses butter. :-) Hope this helps!
