XtraMath – A free web program to master math facts

I just had to do a quick post to let you know about XtraMath.org….a free web program for students, teachers, and parents that helps students master their math facts (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

I set up an account as a teacher, then added my kids.  Each child will have their own login ID, so it will keep track of where each child is in mastering the math facts.

When your child first logs in, it will give them a placement test so that the program knows what facts they need to work on.  Your child will simply keep working doing the flashcard type problems until the program says they are done.  They encourage you to have your child do a “session” each day to help them master their math facts.

This is an awesome resource that you can use in your homeschool.  I have read that the first few years of schooling can solely be focused on memorizing the math facts.  All math is dependent on mastering these facts.  So if you wish, you could use this program as your math curriculum for your younger elementary kids.

  1. I think XtraMath gets recommended so often because it solves a real problem: parents need something simple that keeps fact practice moving without building a whole system by hand.

The place it got hard for us was the daily feel. My daughter could handle the concept work, but a full drill-style session on the same few slow facts started turning into resistance. I still wanted timed recall and spaced review, just in a shorter routine that could stop before it became a fight. That is what led me to build Math Builders.

So I would keep XtraMath in the useful-tool category. If it is working, no reason to change. If a kid understands multiplication but dreads the daily drill, a shorter app session with weak-fact review can be a better home fit.

  2. This is a really great math drill site! I’ve seen several other different versions on online drill, and I like this one the best. I signed up both my son AND myself, so I can learn some of those hard to remember facts, like 8 + 5 . . . now I just have to keep coming back to the site so I can get drilled on it AGAIN– I missed it about three times when I first tried out the program . . . they tell you the correct answer and you have to answer it correctly to go on– then they give you the same problem a little later. I think it will work; it will just take me awhile to learn it 🙂
