Old Homestead Tales – Excellent Living Books for Science {free}

I just got done reading The Bluebirds and Their Neighbors to the kids during our read-aloud time.  We loved it!  I learned so much about different birds and small animals just by reading it to the kids.  There are five books in this series and I bought the first four as hard copies.  My bird-loving son is reading them on his own, but wanted me to read one aloud to everyone…so I did…and so GLAD I did!  I plan on adding the rest of the series to our reading list for next year!

I remembered today that I had found these online as free downloads and thought I’d share the link with you.

You can find all five volumes here to view online or download the PDF file!

  1. Hey Sheri! I'm looking for either some biographies or historical fiction read alouds I can use with my 1st grader for our reading time. Any suggestions? I've done searching online and found a little, but not much.
    1. Hi Kelly, Here are a few ideas: Stories of Great American for Little Americans - This is an old book and one that I sell (ebook and softcover): https://www.lulu.com/shop/edward-eggleston/stories-of-great-americans-for-little-americans/paperback/product-1448483.html Or you can find it online here: https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/10070 This has a Kindle version you can load on your Kindle if you have one. This is a book full of short stories of great Americans. There are easy reader type books, but make good read-alouds for younger ones: Brave Kids-True Stories from American's Past - Cora Frear Pioneer Cat The Bravest Dog Ever-The True Story of Balto The Long Way Westward The Long Way to a New Land The True Story of Pocahontas I also love the YWAM biographies but they may be a bit hard for younger ones to listen to (although mine do). YWAM also has some younger versions of their books. I have not read any of these, but if they are as good as the original biographies..those are excellent! Here are the Heroes for Young Readers: https://www.ywampublishing.com/c-71-heroes-for-young-readers.aspx Here are the Heroes of History for Young Readers: https://www.ywampublishing.com/c-98-heroes-of-history-for-young-readers.aspx I hope that helps Kelly and gives you some different ideas!
