There is just something about receiving a hand-written card from a family member or friend. Today I want to look at another very practical thing stay-at-home moms can do to make a difference in the lives of others — sending hand-written cards!
In a day where digital communication is the norm, there is still something that is so special about receiving a hand-written note from someone. It isn’t that an email, text, or post on a Facebook wall is not meaningful, but there is just something extra special when you take the time to actually write out a note and mail it.
It may seem insignificant, but you can make a difference in other people’s lives simply by taking a few minutes to write out a note to them. I want to encourage you in this and have provided some steps below to get you started!
Step 1 – Buy Some Cards
If you don’t have cards on hand to write out and send, it won’t get done! Stop right now and go buy or order some pretty cards. Be sure to get a variety of cards – for birthdays, anniversaries, get well, thank you, encouragement, etc. I like to get some beautiful cards with Scripture on them, like these by Thomas Kinkade or these beautiful Thoughts from the Word cards. Also, don’t forget to stock up on stamps! You need to have everything together and ready for your card writing or it will get set aside and not done!
Step 2 – Make a List
Start a list of the people that you would like to send a card to. I made a form to go in my planner with a place for the person’s name, and then a place to mark and date when I sent a card. This makes a nice record where you can easily who you have sent cards to and when. Need some ideas of people to send cards to? Here are a few: neighbor, friend, elderly, pastor, family, sponsored child, someone who is sick, someone in need of encouragement, or anyone the Lord lays on your heart!
Step 3 – Add to Your Calendar
Now go to your calendar and, using your list, jot down one person each week to send a card to. If you don’t get it on the calendar you’ll forget! At least that is the way I am. As a stay-at-home, I have way too many things to remember. My calendar/planner is my life-saver!
Step 4 – Write and Send the Cards
Set aside a few minutes each week to write out and send your card. This might be right after your morning devotions, or during the kids’ nap time. Just pick a quiet time when you have a few minutes.
Another idea is to make this a family event and include the kids too! Have a card sending day each week and have everyone choose someone to send a card to. What a neat way to begin teaching your children to focus on the needs of others!
Do you currently send out hand-written cards to others on a regular basis? If not, do you think this is something you could begin to incorporate into your life? I’d love to hear how hand-written cards has made a difference in your life!
