Homemade Hair Conditioner

Recently I have been trying to replace as many of our body care and cleaning products as possible…trying to avoid lots of chemicals and such in the store-bought products.  I’ll have to share later about a product we are using for shampoo, shower soap, and hand soap.  It is amazing…that will come later.  Now I want to share about our homemade hair conditioner.  I know it sounds yucky, but it really does work.  Give it a try!

HOMEMADE HAIR CONDITIONER

  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 T. lemon juice (optional – this will lighten hair a bit and add some highlights – leave out if you don’t want this)
  • 1 cup filtered water

How To Make: Mix everything up in a plastic sprayer bottle (found very inexpensively at any department store). I made a double batch and it almost filled up this spray bottle.

How To Use: Give the bottle a good shake, then spray on wet hair after shampooing.  Massage through hair, then rinse well.

  1. Sheri, does this lighten dark hair? I also am getting a little grey hair, so I don’t want to “lighten” it any further!
  2. WoW I love all these body care homemade products... I also love your blog and recipes and your breakfast e-book and menu planning.. Thank you so much !!
  3. I am very interested in what you are using for hand soap, shower soap, shampoo etc..... Are you still going to post them? Or maybe I have just not been looking in the right place. Btw I love your Lysol receipe!!!! Love the way it makes my house smell. I used the lavender castille soap in it. Thanks for sharing the receipes you have found I have been using and sharing a lot of them!!!!
  4. We have been using the cider vinegar as a rinse for sometime and find it wonderful! The organic vinegar is best as it still has the "mother" in it..this is the pulpy stuff that floats in the bottle but we have used the regular vinegar as well. We also use baking soda and water as a shampoo...I will try adding lemon juice though, haven't done that yet :)
  5. What about long term effects? Since vinegar is an acid, won't it just end up drying the hair and/or scalp?
    1. I can only share from my experience so far...and it has not dried out my hair at all...in fact it feels better than it ever has!
    1. Hi Debbie, You can also use this as a detangler. Just spray a little in your hair and comb through. Once your hair dries it won't smell like apple cider vinegar! It really does work for us!
