A Peek Into Our Morning Reading Time

I love reading to the kids while they are eating breakfast and I use this time to get in some reading that we may not have time for otherwise. While we always read out of The Child’s Story Bible every day, I usually read out of two additional books as well. I try to find something devotional/character building in nature, and one more educational. I thought I’d share what we’ve been reading lately!

The Child's Story Bible

We always begin our morning reading time with a chapter out of The Child’s Story Bible by Catherine Vos. I love this children’s Bible more than any other I have read out of and it has become a permanent part of our morning reading time! I think we have read it completely through twice and are on our third time through.

Quite a while back I bought the In Grandma’s Attic set when they were on sale on Kindle. I never got around to reading them to the kids until recently. We have been reading Book One and actually just finished it. The kids loved it and were sorry to see it come to an end. I guess that means that I will be incorporating the other three books in the series in the future!

I picked up Cassie & Caleb – Discover God’s Wonderful Design at our local Bible bookstore when they were having sidewalk sales. It looked like a good book to hang onto and incorporate into our morning reading time. We have one chapter left in this one and it really has been good. The short stories help the kids relate to the Biblical principle being taught and it has given us lots of good things to discuss.

At the beginning of the school year, I bought a copy of Tricia Goyer’s new book, Prayers That Changed History. We are about ready to start reading through this book and I can’t wait! Not only will we be getting in a bit of history, but seeing how prayer can truly make a difference!

Mozart the Wonder Boy

The Great Musicians Series is a wonderful series to use to study composers. We read about Bach earlier this year and listened to some of his music as we read. We just started this book, Mozart the Wonder Boy, this week and can’t wait to start listening to some of the great music he composed. This is an area of study that I have really neglected and so it has been a good fit to add it into our morning reading time!

I hope you have enjoyed seeing some of the books we’ve been reading lately. For those that may wonder, I eat my breakfast before the kids. That frees me up to read to them while they eat. The kids usually get done before I am done reading, so they just sit and listen until I am done. We close our reading time with prayer and then they are off to get their chores done before we start our homeschool.

I would love to hear what you are reading with your kids! Please share in the comments!

  1. We're reading the Grandma's Attic books right now, too. We've read the first four and are now reading "Away From Home", about when Mable and Sarah Jane went to school in another town when they were 16. We're also reading "Beorn the Proud", about the Vikings, "Benjie", about a little Amish boy, and "The World of Columbus and Sons". I read while breakfast and lunch dishes are being done, and sometimes in the evening, too. We love our read-aloud time, and for the past couple of years I've recorded all the books as I read them, so they can listen again while they are doing jobs, when I can't be reading.
    1. Thanks for sharing Emma! I'll have to check some of these other books you shared! I didn't realize there were more beyond the 4 Grandma's Attic books. Yeah!
      1. I think there are 10 in all. They follow Mabel and Sarah Jane through the first few years of marriage. Did you know the same author wrote a 4-book series about Orphan Train children? They are great, also. The first, I believe, is Looking for Home.
