The One Thing I Didn’t Realize I Needed as a Homeschool Mom

Before I dive into this post, I do want to mention that I recorded a podcast on this very topic! If you would rather listen than read, you can listen to that podcast here!
I have been homeschooling for 20 years!
When I first started homeschooling my oldest way back in 1998, I was the first to sign up for the local homeschool conference. I loved going each year, browsing the vendor hall, buying curriculum, looking at new books, and attending some of the sessions.
Not only was it nice to be able to look at curriculum first-hand, but being there with other homeschoolers, listening in to the session about homeschooling, it just made you feel a sense of belonging. A feeling that you were not alone.
But as the years went by and we added more children to our family, it became harder to go to the conference every year. It was difficult dragging all the kids with me, trying to keep them corralled while looking at curriculum, and then having them ready to eat or go to the bathroom or just tired, when I had so much more I wanted to look at!
I think I went for about the first five years, and then I totally stopped. I ordered my curriculum online and just didn’t bother with going.
But recently something happened that got my attention, and I realized what I have been missing all these years.
Want to know what got my attention?
Well, it was the 2018 Homeschool Moms Conference!
This year I really felt the Lord asking me to step out of my comfort zone, so when the opportunity came up to be a speaker at this online homeschool conference, I said yes. I was excited to share some of the things that I have learned over the years of homeschooling.
But what I didn’t except was to be so drawn in by all the speakers and the session topics that are going to be shared. I literally read through the descriptions of all the sessions (especially the homeschool ones) and my heart was hungry for more. I wanted to hear, to watch, to learn from the messages that are going to be shared.
So this conference is what opened my eyes to something I had been missing these past 15 or so years of homeschooling. I was missing out on the blessing of attending a homeschool conference!
Here is what I was missing and how this conference is going to fill this void:
1 – Being challenged to be all God wants me to be
This is where the conference sessions come in. It is easy when you have been homeschooling as long as I have, to become bored and just plain tired out. I was doing enough to get by, but not being challenged to be the best homeschool mom God wants me to be.
As I looked through the session descriptions, I saw so many that were going to challenge me and grow me as a homeschool mom. I can’t wait!
I also love that I will be able to watch these sessions whenever I want from the comfort of my own home. So I can take advantage of those quiet times in my home to sneak in some more homeschool encouragement for me!
2 – Being reminded that I was not in this alone
Since I haven’t gone to any homeschool conferences in years, it can be easy for me to feel all alone. I know I am not, I know many online friends who homeschool, but this conference has made me realize that we all need each other, now more than ever.
It has been a true joy to be one of the speakers and to get to interact with the other speakers as this conference was being organized. These are moms from all walks of life, from all levels of homeschool experience, who are coming together to share from their hearts.
God has given each of us a story, a message to share, and I am looking forward to listening in on the sessions to hear what God wants me to learn.
3 – Encouragement and fellowship from other homeschoolers
One aspect of this online homeschool conference, is the private Facebook group for the attendees. I am really looking forward to chatting with the other speakers as well as other homeschoolers. Sharing our struggles, our challenges, and encouraging one another.
We need each other!
I don’t know where you are in your homeschooling journey. But I do know one thing. We need each other!
We need to learn from one another, to be encouraged and challenged by one another.
Whether you are just starting out homeschooling or have been homeschooling for 20+ years like me, this conference is for you!
I do want to mention that there is a track in the conference filled with work at home sessions too. So even if you don’t homeschool, there is something here for you too!
The 2018 Homeschool Moms Conference is going to be amazing and I would love for you to join me!
