This new year has brought a time of reflection, searching, and changing in my life. As many of you know, I have named this year the year of “Simplify and Love”, and this is not only reaching into the more external areas of my life, but also my heart.
As the Lord is growing me and changing me, He is making it clear that it must begin with ME.
How can I expect my children to show Christ-like qualities that I lack in?
How can expect them to enjoy learning when I don’t show joy in my own daily tasks?
How can I expect my children to show love for one another, when I neglect to show love to them through unhealthy relational habits?
My heart is broken over how my own selfishness has hindered my relationship with the Lord, with my husband, and especially my children whom I am home with all day. I am realizing that the most important thing that I can do as a mom, a wife, is to deepen my relationship with the Lord. It is only as I rightly relate with my heavenly Father, that I will be able to properly relate to my husband and children.
I know that one of the best ways to deepen my relationship with the Lord is through reading His word. So, this year I have been using the YouVersion App for my Kindle Fire to read through the Bible. I found a neat reading plan that is chronological. It gives me what to read each day, as well as a button I can click to listen to the audio if I wish. I love it!
But along with “reading” the Bible, I am realizing that I must be a “doer” of the Word! I must obey. It is only as I surrender my flesh each moment of the day, that He can work in me, changing me. It is not enough to just read truth each day, I must obey it, I must LIVE it.
I want to encourage you…if you are struggling with feelings of guilt, inadequacy, etc., feeling like you are not the mom or wife you should be. Go to the Lord…seek His face, dig into His Word, and then obey what He is showing you.
Begin with one thing you know that He is telling you to do. Write it down, and then be intentional to do it. Once this area of obedience is mastered, move on to the next thing. God is faithful to only give you what you can handle. Bit by bit, He will guide you on a journey to knowing Him more. And in the process you will notice your relationships with your husband and children improving as well…because you have changed.
It is only as you walk in obedience to Him that He can work in your life.
Please pray for me…and I will pray for you…that we will grow in grace and knowledge of our Savior…and walk in obedience to His Word.
