Natural laundry detergent and fabric softener

Over the past couple years I have been researching ways that I can cut down on the amount of toxins in our home.  Recently I have switched to a more natural laundry detergent and fabric softener.  I thought I would share what I am using now and how that is going.  (Note:  I purchased these at Amazon, but I noticed the price of the laundry detergent I talk about below is higher than when I bought it.  So, you may want to do some research to find it cheaper somewhere else!)

First, I want to talk about these Wool Dryer Balls from The Willow Store.  I was a little skeptical to try them, but I used some of my Swagbucks Amazon Gift Cards so I got them at a discount.  I figured I would give them a try to see how they work.  This set comes with 3 wool dryer balls.  You use 2-3 balls in your dryer in place of any fabric softener in your washer or dryer sheets in your dryer.  I have to say that I am impressed!  I won’t say that it totally takes care of the static…some of our clothes still have a little static, but not bad!  The clothes are soft and I do believe the drying time is cut down too.  What I like about these, too, is that you just leave them in the dryer and reuse them…they are supposed to last for years.  I have been using them for about a week now and really like them.  I do have some natural fabric softener I can use in the washer if needed, but so far I haven’t needed it.  I love it!   Why don’t you give them a try too!

The laundry detergent I am using right now is the ECOS brand shown above.  I bought it through Amazon in a 4-pack…and I should note that it was quite a bit cheaper than the prices are now.  I think I bought the 4-pack for around $30.  Each bottle does 100 HE loads, so I thought that wasn’t a bad price.  You may need to shop around for a better price though.  I love this detergent too.  It does a great job and leaves the clothes smelling so fresh and clean.

How about you?  What kind of detergent and fabric softener do you use?

  7. Sheri, I knew you used to make your own laundry detergent, and you mentioned it again here. Just curious, why did you stop?
    1. Hi Karin, Yes, I did used to make my own laundry detergent. I started making the liquid version and it was "ok" but was just a pain to make and store. I then started making the powdered version, but when calculating the cost, found it wasn't much cheaper than buying liquid, and it didn't dissolve very well especially in cold water. So now I am using my Swagbucks and buying detergent through Amazon. It is pretty reasonable and in my HE washer I don't use as much either so it lasts longer. I hope that explains!!!

  9. I make my laundry soap also, and this is where I got the recipe, at the bottom of the page are the links to make either liquid, which if you double makes a 5 gallon bucket for less then $4, and the dry, which doesn't make as much, but is much quicker to make, and works just as well.. with these recipes, it cost about 4-5 cents per load for detergent!! https://homemadelaundrysoap.net/
  10. I use Charlie's Soap and wool dryer balls. I love both of them! :)
  11. Hi all. We too use the Ecos brand of detergent. We get ours at Sams Club for about $12 a bottle and it does 210 HE loads. We have been using it for over a year now and I have been very pleased with it.
    1. Yes, I use the same and from Sam's too!!! I've been thoroughly pleased at the price and that it's healthy for our family. If you have a Costco near you, they sell it too. When we were in AK, that's where we bought ours at a similar price!
