Our Garden

We decided to put in a small garden this year and boy am I glad we did!  My husband dug up a 7 foot by 11 foot section of a corner of our yard for our garden.  Yes…I know it is small, but we have a lot packed into that small space!    We planted 4 tomato plants, 1 cherry tomato plant, about 8 cucumber bushes, a row of spinach, and a row of swiss chard.  We have picked the spinach and swiss chard several times already and enjoyed nice big salads.  Yum!  You can see the spinach and swiss chard in my picture above.  I can’t believe how fast the spinach and swiss chard grow.  Saturday I pretty much picked all the big leaves clean off of both kinds of plants and by Monday they were ready to pick again!  No more buying expensive baby spinach at the store…at least for a while yet!  Now I can’t wait for the tomatoes to get ripe so we can enjoy those on the salads too.

When the cucumbers start producing, I am going to make bunches and bunches of the Lacto-Fermented Dill Pickles (see recipe here).  They are SO good!  I also want to try some lacto-fermented dill relish.  I still have a bunch of canned dill relish from a couple years ago, so I may wait on that.  I am hoping to make some lacto-fermented salsa when the tomatoes start producing…that is if we don’t eat them all fresh.  We love toasted tomato sandwiches.  Yes, I know we’re wierd, but there is nothing like two slices of toasted homemade whole wheat bread smeared with mayonnaise, then filled with a couple thick slices of tomato!  Yummy!

I just want to encourage you…if you have thought of putting in a garden and think you don’t have the time or the space…you might be wrong.  It really does not take that much space or that much time.  My best tip is start small and only grow a few things you know you will eat.  The gardening fever will catch on and the next year you will be ready to plant even more!

Happy gardening!  I’m off to pick some more spinach and swiss chard for a salad for dinner!

  1. Sheri, Way to go on the garden! I started off with a 20 foot by 22 foot garden. My fall garden is now a total of 52 foot by 22 foot, about 1200 square feet! In Arizona, we have three growing seasons, and when planned correctly, we can do all three. I love gardening and gardening is my passion. If you need help and can't find the answer(which I know you will find!) let me know and I will assist you in any way. Mike
  2. Hi Sheri! If I'm allowed to be just a bit envious, I am! We just got our garden in this week. We did our first one last year, with great results - God is so good! We have a 20 x 20 plot and got some in via seed and some in seedlings. However, we did not have much luck with seedlings this year, so our harvest will definitely be later. We have tomatoes, cukes, peppers, lettuce, celery, carrots, pumpkins and various herbs. The celery and carrots are new for us this year, so I hope they do well. I learned a lot last year and am hoping to learn more this year; especially in the areas of preserving the harvest for winter, or later. Thanks for sharing your bounty!
    1. Hi Heather...I think I'm the one to be envious! Your garden sounds wonderful! Maybe next year we can expand :). Have a wonderful weekend!
