Crocheted Kitchen Scrubbie

One of my Homemaker’s Mentor lessons this month is on making crocheted scrubbies and sponges for your kitchen. I can’t wait to try to make the sponges! I wanted to share with you what I have been using for my kitchen scrubbie to scrub my dishes.

I found this pattern a few years ago and made a bunch of these for Christmas gifts. Each scrubbie takes 2 little packages of plastic canvas yarn – 1 package for each side (unless you buy larger skeins of the plastic canvas yarn). The little packages of this yarn are $.25 at Walmart, so a scrubbie costs $.50 to make! They are so quick to make and I LOVE these for scrubbing my dishes! It is kind of a combination dishcloth and scrubber. It is all I use to hand wash my dishes! I need to crochet up some more – mine is getting kind of worn out! These would also make great stocking stuffers!

(I’m sorry I don’t have a better picture to show you. This is a picture of my current scrubbie…I need to crochet some more as this one is getting kind of worn out!) Ok..here is the pattern…

Round Scrubbie

Materials:

plastic canvas yarn

I/9 – 5.50mm crochet hook

Instructions:

Rnd 1: ch 4, 7 dc in 4th ch from hk, join to top of beg ch 3 (8 dc)

Rnd 3: ch 3, dc in same st, dc in next dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in next dc, rep from *around, join (24 dc)

Finish off.

Make 2 of the above circles. Do not finish off the 2nd circle.

Place the two circles together with wrong sides facing together and join with a row of sc.

    1. How large are the scrubbies supposed to turn out? Mine turned out 2 1/2 inches across, which seemed to small. I added an extra row and used a larger hook. Perfect!
      1. The 2 1/2 inches is about what mine are...I like them smaller I guess :). That's a great idea, though, if you want them bigger, just add another row or two and/or use a larger hook. Thanks for sharing! I use my scrubbie every day!
  1. My daughter's friend recently gave me a scrubbie and the directions for making it from plastic netting, but it was more work because you had to cut the netting into strips.  Not loads more work, but I need all the help I can get.  LOL
  2. I too loved this pattern I got from you, Sheri, but alas, I was only able to make two scrubbies before my walmart quit carrying the plastic canvas yarn.  And I gave both of those away because I thought I would be able to easily get and make more.  I looked at Hobby Lobby and they didn't have it or know what I was talking about.  I have yet to look at Michael's, but I just thought I would do an online search to see if I could find any to order.  (I am really wanting to make up a bunch of these to put on gifts to be the bow and give two gifts in one.)  I was wondering if this is the right stuff?  I can't exactly remember what brand it was or anything because it has been so long now since I made them.     https://craftersmarket.net/plcayan20ya.html
    1. @99karin Hi Karin,  Yes, this is the right stuff...plastic canvas yarn.  I wonder why it is so hard to find it now?  I still have a bunch that my mom gave me, so I haven't had to buy any recently.  I guess as long as we can still find it online...:)
      1. @SheriG Thanks, Sheri.  I am going to keep looking around online a bit just to see if I find any better deals on it.  Thanks for letting me know it's the stuff I am looking for.  :)
  3. I cut the plastic netting bags that I get produce and some other items in into yarn. Then I crochet with that. Totally free and it reduces what I put into the landfill. The most recent source was on the outside of the turkeys I bought at Thanksgiving.
  4. Sheri - I am having trouble - I am not good crocheting in the round. I don't understand when it says "join to top of beg chain 3" . Where is the top of this and isn't this one of the double crochets? Sorry, I know it should be easy!! Thank you, Kathy
    1. Dear Kathy, I wish I could just pop over and show you in person! When it says to "join to top of beg chain 3" that means that when you started that row you began with a chain. This chain usually is in place of a double crochet in the pattern. For example, when you first start you are told to chain 4, then do 7 double crochets in the 4th chain from the hook...so that in essence you have 8 double crochets (with the 3 chains at the beginning in place of 1 double crochet). When it tells you to join to that chain 3, it means to do a slip stitch in the top chain of that chain 3. So each round you do, you will do a slip stitch in the top of the chain 3 that you began that row with. I hope this makes sense! Just email or post a comment if you still have questions, ok? Have fun crocheting!
      1. Thank you. That is what I thought I should be doing but it just is coming out weird looking. I will try it again. The plastic canvas yarn is actually made by Needleloft - not Needlecroft!! I ordered some online since it is not being made anymore. It figures....here I found something I like and they discontinue it :( Anyway, thank you again for your help. I found another really great pattern that has a cotton material on one side and the nylon material on the other so you have a dischloth and scrubbie in one!! Kathy
        1. Kathy...I wish you were closer...I'd pop over and give you a hand! Do you know anyone who crochets that you could get to help you? I hope you can get it figured out! Maybe I need to do a video of me making one!
  5. Hi - I was wondering in what area of Walmart you found this canvas yarn?? Is it plastic? Do you know if Joanns Craft sells it? I really want to try it. Thank you.
    1. Hi Kathy, Plastic canvas yarn is a heavier duty yarn that has a bit of an itch to it. It is not plastic, but is just a stronger yarn that is used to make crafts with plastic canvas (a plastic sheet that you cut out and then sew in-kind of like cross stitch). I would just go to the craft department and ask someone if they carry plastic canvas yarn. They should be able to tell you if they have it or not. Some Walmarts it seems are really downsizing their craft departments, so you may have to go to a store like Hobby Lobby or something to get it. I used to buy mine at Walmart in little packages. You can also buy it in larger skeins too. I hope you find some! I just LOVE my scrubbie!
      1. Sheri - Thank you for the reply. Could you tell me the brand name of the stuff you bought from Walmart? That way I know what I am looking for. I have never found the person(s) working in the craft department at Walmart very helpful and yes, most of them have really downsized their supplies. Thank you again - I am hoping I can find the yarn so I can try this. Kathy
        1. Hi kathy, I don't have any more of the yarn I got at Walmart, so I couldn't tell you. I know it is 100% nylon yarn though, if that helps. I would get these little packages of the yarn that were 20 yards. You can get little skeins too of this yarn that are 50 yards. At Walmart I used to find the plastic canvas yarn by the cross-stitch and embroidery thread. But then our Walmart stopped carrying the embroidery thread and I am thinking they don't have the plastic canvas yarn either. I'll have to look the next time I am there and see. I would just look and see if you can find it at Walmart...maybe look by the yarn too. If you can't find it and the Walmart worker isn't helpful, then try a craft store. These scrubbies make wonderful Christmas gifts too! I hope you find it!
          1. Hi Sheri - Ok, I found some of the plastic canvas yarn. I went to Hobby Bench for something else and found some. They are in the 20yd strands, like you had said. The brand I got is "Darice" but they also had "Needlecroft". I looked both of them up on yahoo and a couple of sites said that the "Needlecroft" is being discontinued. They are selling what they have left for really cheap. I am going to try to make a scrubbie using it and if I like it, I will buy them out!!!
  6. Sheri, I really enjoy all these ideas you have been sharing. Thanks so much. Now all I need is the time to try them all. :) God Bless Cyndi
